Rheumatoid Arthritis and Heart disease - what is the connection?

I volunteer and I am a speaker for both The Arthritis Foundation and Go red for Women . What are their connection. Take a look at this recent study that was published in The Journal of Internal medicine which revealed that RA sufferers have a 60 % increase of heart disease after only one year of being diagnosed with RA.

Furthermore the Mayo clinic conducted another study that shows that Heart sudden deaths are more common in RA sufferers because we live in pain every day and are so used to pain that we wont report or notice chest pain or other signs like arm pain jaw pain etc -

Funrise Children's Arthritis Camp June 12 2011

This past Sunday at Funrise Camp for children with Arthritis at AD Barnes Park

The Arthritis Foundation and Miami Children's hospital sponsor this yearly event. This year was the 20th Anniversary - I work every year as a volunteer and it is so sad that these children have to endure joint replacement and pain every day of their life. I assisted in registering the children since I am an RN and realized they are taking more meds that I am.

They have such courage as they approach every single day without a cure in the near future.

This camp is excellent because it provides a safe place for them to discuss their feelings on the Bon fire night . They also have great fun and supervised activities like swimming with the dolphins. Here I am with 2 of the pediatric Rheumatologist who assist with this camp . Dr Rivas Chacon is also my rheumatologist for over 18 years.

Did you know that there are 360,000 children with Juvenile arthritis and only 119 pediatric rheumatologists in the country. I know of a 10 year old girl who has to travel from Puerto Rico every 3 months to come see the doctor.

I had an amazing experience listening and talking to the veterans of Brigade 2506 who were Bay of Pigs Veterans . Did you know that Americans were also killed in the Bay of pigs invasion?? There is a book by Felix Rodriguez called " Shadow Warriors " regarding his memories and experience at the Bay of pigs - All these men in the picture with me are int heir 70's and after the Bay of Pigs joined the USA forces either in CIA , Air Force , Navy etc and have spent their whole life fighting communism in the world.

I have been named Co -chair for this years Dade county walk again together with National volunteer Kathy Lubbers .I am so humbled and proud. Please join us on November 12 at Greynolds Park in North Miami Beach and form a Team for this worthy walk - As many of you know I have suffered from Rheumatoid arthritis since I was in my twenties and have endured 7 reconstruction surgeries in my hands and feet.

We must continue research in new medications and I will not hope to find a cure. I want to be pain free someday and so do 50 million Americans.

We need to educate the public that arthritis is not just an elderly person's disease. There are over 360,000 children affected by juvenile arthritis and many have to endure reconstructive joint surgeries at such an early age.

Mireya Kilmon uses pageant successes to promote causes

MIREYA KILMONMireya Kilmon, is an intelligent, passionate woman whose charitable outreach has a larger voice because of her success on the pageant circuit.
As the 2009-10 reigning American Image National Queen, Kilmon has championed many charitable causes over the years, not the least of which is the Arthritis Foundation. In fact, Kilmon recently was named co-chair for the second annual Miami-Dade County Arthritis Foundation “Let’s Move Together” Walk to take place on Nov. 13 at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne.
As someone who has suffered with rheumatoid arthritis for more than 20 years, Kilmon has undergone many surgeries and overcome much to achieve her success. Of course, arthritis and pageants do not define this Cuban-born ball of fire who can sing, dance and act with the best of them. Kilmon even has revealed a wonderful talent as a photographer, winning first place ribbons at recent Art Federation art shows.
Kilmon is not only a wife and mother, but also is a dedicated volunteer who juggles all that with a career. She has been a very active member of the GFWC’s Coral Gables Woman’s Club for more than 17 years and has been the club’s Domestic Violence Committee chair for the past three years.
She currently serves as the club’s first vice president and is a judge for the Miss USA Pageant system and presently is coaching three girls for different pageant systems. For the past two years she also has been a judge for the Junior Orange Bowl Pageant.
With a background in the medical field, Kilmon is an intelligent and knowledgeable speaker on many health-related issues. She takes full advantage of her ability to speak in both English and Spanish when offered opportunities to educate and inspire crowds on issues near and dear to her heart.
Kilmon is a person who truly believes in giving back to the community and has a long history of doing just that. Aside from giving voice to her many causes, the American Image Pageant also gave her an opportunity to represent the older women of America who still compete in Mrs. Pageants in the USA and meeting the likes of Donald Trump, earlier this year at the Miss Universe Pageant.
Whether she is representing the American Image Pageant, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club and its May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic, the Arthritis Foundation or any other charity, you can be sure she is giving it her all. You also may see her soon playing the role of a nun with Venezuelan actress Taniusha Mollet in Sacrificio De Mujer filmed in July to be aired this fall.

" Fashion Show " The Teen Board - Coral gables

The “History in the Making” fashion show brought the new members of South Florida’s Teen Board together on the runway with past Teen Board members to tell their stories, showcase local designers’ clothing, serve their community and honor the amazing women who made it all possible.
The event was held at the Westin Colonnade Hotel in Coral Gables on Wednesday evening, July 21. Fashion veterans Hannelore Hill and Sonia Gibson received Lifetime Achievement awards for blazing fashion trails across Miami for the past 30 years. The awards were presented by those whose lives have been impacted by them.
Networking cocktail reception was followed by the fashion shows and awards ceremony.
Teen Board models use their personal experiences to provide an emotional shelter for other teens and younger children in their communities. They do so by creating an alliance with South Florida After School All Stars, which is a local chapter of the leading national organization that provides year-round, school-based, after-school programs, including academics, health and fitness to middle school aged students.

October 23 - The Day

My surgery is finally done - spent 3 days at the hospital - It was so painful and the pain medication made me so sick - My son came to spend a week at home with me. My friend Paul is the Vice president of the Surgery Dept .. He was wonderful and was there checking on me all day and they treated me as a VIP.

My director Deb and Steve sent me the most beautiful roses when I got home . Flowers do make you feel better. Thank you

Thank you to my Coral Gables Women's Clubs buddies for all your prayers.

It was scary because I had not seen my hand for a week . The bandages looked like a big snowball as you can see by the pictures - I am showing before and after pictures and also X rays. Rheumatoid Arthritis is like a parasite alien living inside you destroying bones, tendons cartilage little by little.
I have a very long challenging road ahead of me with physical therapy at least for 6 months .
I am living just one day at a time. Everyone on the pageant voyboards have been so supportive with prayers and good wishes. Thank you my pageant sisters. Thank you to my family and friends . It is time like these that I realize how lucky I am to have you .

As a new resident of the Town of Davie ,I was proud to participate in this parade with so much history. Our theme was "The Green place to live" . It is a great town of rural homes ,equestrian trails, agriculture and colleges and universities. Bonnie is the event coordinator for the town > She did an amazing job coordinating so many floats bands ,horses and the festival and rodeo that followed.

The Coral Gables Women's club poses with me after a speaker event which was the launch for "Steps for the Roses". It is a program to promote walking and exercise wearing step counters everyday. I donated the pedometers and spoke regarding Heart disease and prevention and causes. Junior Orange Bowl Royal Search 2009

I was honored to be a judge last week at the Annual Junior Orange Bowl Pageant - The pageant was for girls ages 12 to 14 who also work in their community and represent the true future of our young women ( wow - mini Internationals ) . This was my first time as a judge and I can understand how difficult it can be.

I met Anastasia Miss Florida USA and discovered she had been an Orange Bowl queen when she was 12 yrs old

Well I made top 12 finalists and I was honored to be chosen People's Choice award. The journey This year was wonderful and I was honored to meet and participate with such an amazing group of women. Congratulations to Deanna Rollyson on her win! She will make a great queen and please call me if I can support you in anything.

To my Family , friends and sponsors, thank you for your support encouragement and trust in me. I want to especially thank my brother and sister in law who flew from Puerto Rico to be there with me.To my husband , what can say he is my partner for life and I know I can always count on you on everything that I try to achieve, no matter what it is .
I will continue to pursue a crown and title since I believe this is an excellent venue to promote My "Gold Standard Advocacy Program" and be heard and make a difference in the world.

Miss Florida Latina US 2008

This weekend I was a guest at the Mrs Florida Latina Pageant. It was a wonderful event showcasing young women from age 18 to 27 of Hispanic heritage representing the Latina culture and heritage. My niece Tiffany Perez , had been pre- selected to represent Cuba . She did wonderful at the pageant and placed Top 10 finalist and received the Best Interview Award . I am so proud of her. She had never been in a pageant before and I think she was following my footsteps when this opportunity arrived. This pageant coordinated by Pageant director Giancarla Sambo Esq has very strong ties with the Miss Universe Pageant.

There were a lot of distinguished guests and judges including Evelyn M Lossada ,editor of Imagen magazine. Pageantry magazine was also photographing the event and Telemundo television videotaped the event.

Go Red for Women Program

Since my attendance at the International pageant in July I have reviewed and studied the Go red for women website . I ordered the educational booklets and the red dress pins . I read and studied the area for professionals and since I am an R.N. I realized I can really make a difference lecturing and giving presentation for this cause. So my first presentation was to the Coral Gables Women;s Club, I downloaded the power point presentation and according to the attendees it was a great success. I received some requests to do additional presentation to other organizations and even employers . I am prepared to expand my presentations state wide and nationwide Since I am bilingual I can also complete the presentations in Spanish. Spanish women have a higher risk for heart disease. I am preparing to do some presentations in Puerto Rico presently.

I just returned from the Mrs International pageant held this past weekend at Skokie, Illinois. I felt so privileged to meet so many accomplished ,beautiful women who continue day in and day out to do so much for their community. I also learned so much about this pageant system and now grow to love it more each day. I only hope and pray that I will be the one privileged to represent Florida next year at this event.
I want to express a big thank you to Ashley and Joe Macguire/ They really made me feel like part of the "Maguire Posse" while I was in Chicago. I am grateful for your new friendship that this pageant has brought into my life.
It was very exciting to hear that the Mrs. International organization has joined forces with the American Heart Association and now we will be a working very closely with the go red for women national campaign to bring awareness to the biggest killer of women . This cause is also dear to my heart since most of my family on my father's side have died young from heart attacks and hypertension is so prevalent in my family.
Laine Berry the new Mrs International 2008 has been working for this cause for the last 10 yrs. I was so impressed with Mrs Georgia . She shares the pains and challenges with Rheumatoid Arthritis as I do. I could not resist walking up to her and introducing myself and sharing my story with her. We were limited in time but I will be in touch with her to see how we can join forces in our advocacy with The Arthritis Foundation.

The Arthritis Foundation - Kids Funrise Camp

I assisted in registering kids and gave them all gifts and took pictures of them today on the first day of their camp. I also crowned all the girls as princesses and the boys got Hotwheels .It was such a rewarding experience . Next Year I want to volunteer for the whole week as a counselor. It reminded me of my Girls Scout camp when I was 10 yrs old . My most memorable moment was one a little girl said "You can't be a princess if you have Arthritis" My answer, You can be anything you want if you dream it, want it and work for it".

Dr Rafael Chivas- Chacon is the head of the clinical camp . He is the Chief of Rheumatology for Miami Children's Hospital and is also my Doctor. I was so happy to be able to share this time with the kids and be a mentor for them. I can also understand their illness since I am Dr Rivas 's Patient myself and have had years of challenges with this chronic illness including multiple reconstructive surgery of my hands and feet .

Family importance

I value and appreciate my family so much and think that family values and traditions you pass down to generations are so important . My mother and father who both passed away years ago said no matter what you have you must defend your family . They will always be there for you no matter what you go through. They were so right . I want to share my family - I have so many cousins I can't even remember their names ,especially in Spain where my mother is from.
My father's side of the family was French and everyone says I have the looks of the French side and the personality "Ce La vie" .
My sister and I did not get along to well when we were teenagers especially when I went away to college. We are like night and day . But after my parents died she is like part of my oxygen which I breath event though we are both busy with work and she travels a lot we seemed to almost talk at least every other day.
My children are the miracles of my life. I had complications at childbirth undiagnosed twins. Now I" m so proud of them and what great adults they have become . My son lives is New York and graduated with a finance business degree and my daughter lives near me and graduated with a psychology and criminal justice degree.
My husband, what can I say to be married to me with all my interests and going off in so many directions and volunteering in so many organizations and thinking I can save the world all by my self and yet he never says no . He is by my side every step of the way no matter how difficult or crazy my idea is and is always doing anything he can to support me . This pageant being just one of the many projects. Thank you all for loving me just the way I am.
